Pfizer countersues Massachusetts-based Moderna in COVID-19 vaccine patent fight

COVID-19 vaccine partners Pfizer and BioNTech are countersuing Cambridge-based Moderna in an ongoing fight over the technology used in the shots. Both Moderna and the Pfizer-BioNTech partnership created vaccines based on messenger RNA technology, which teaches the body’s immune system to target a specific protein found in a virus. In the case of the coronavirus, both targeted the spike protein extending out from the surface of the virus.In August, Moderna filed a lawsuit alleging that its competitor’s vaccine infringes on patents filed between 2010 and 2016. Pfizer and BioNTech say they did not copy Moderna’s technology. In their countersuit, they asked the court to dismiss Moderna’s original lawsuit and invalidate Moderna’s patents. Meanwhile, Moderna is also involved in a public dispute with the National Institutes of Health over intellectual property rights and faces lawsuits by two biotech companies for cases of alleged patent infringement.
