Biden to contrast his economic agenda with GOP in Md. speech with weeks to election

Today, President Biden focused on manufacturing and the economy in a visit to a Volvo facility in Hagerstown, Md., welcoming the latest jobs report that shows the creation of 263,000 jobs in September and some 10 million during his nearly two years in office. “All across America, we’re proving ‘Made in America’ isn’t just a slogan, it’s a reality, for proving that our best days are ahead of us, not behind us,” Biden said in remarks after touring the facility.
His visit comes 32 days before midterm elections that will decide the balance of power in Congress. In his remarks, Biden warned that Republicans, if returned to power, would enact policies that jeopardize Social Security, Medicare and veterans benefits. He also called out several Republicans by name who voted against the bipartisan infrastructure bill, decrying it as “socialism,” and then asked for money for their districts and states. “You can’t make this stuff up. I was surprised to see so many socialists in the Republican caucus,” he said.

On our radar: More Senate candidates go head-to-head in debates
As we wrote on Thursday, debates are here ahead of this year’s midterm elections and the streak continues Friday with Senate candidates in Wisconsin and North Carolina facing off in separate events. Here’s what we’ll be watching this weekend:
- North Carolina Senate candidates to meet on a debate stage in Raleigh. Democrat Cheri Beasley and Republican Ted Budd are vying for retiring Sen. Richard Burr’s (R) seat.
- In Wisconsin, Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes (D) will face incumbent Sen. Ron Johnson (R). The race is widely seen as a favorable one for Democrats to potentially pick up a seat in the Senate.
- Trump rallies are back. The former president will hold a rally in Nevada on Saturday, and one in Arizona on Sunday, where he will appear along some of his endorsees, including Arizona Senate hopeful Blake Masters.
- The vice president to speak at a reception for Texas Democratic Party in Austin. The Saturday fundraiser helps support the state party’s priorities.
- Biden is in Delaware. He has no public events on his schedule.
