Utah is provided more money from FEMA for COVID-19 reimbursements – KSL NewsRadio
UTAH CO — When COVID-19 was declared a national emergency, FEMA provided the country with money to aid those who needed it. FEMA, or Federal Emergency Management Association, supports citizens and emergency workers during emergencies.
The CARES act more than doubled FEMAs available funds to aid in relief of COVID-19, according to the FEMA website. The CARES act signing took place in March of 2020. Cares stands for Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security.
FEMA has aided UTAH with more than $381 million in response to COVID-19 since April, 4 2020. Recently, Utah received another $1.1 million to reimburse for costs accrued between March of 2020 and May of 2022.
To help with COVID cost, FEMA is providing $1.1 million to Utah County. The reimbursement was from previous use of shelter and other needs for emergency workers. This includes meals, transportation and other services. Additionally, law enforcement, firefighters, EMS workers, and hospital staff were using the shelter.
Currently, the federal cost share for COVID-19 aid is 90%. However, FEMA has announced that eligibility of COVID-19 reimbursement and work costs will end on May 11, 2023. In addition to state help, FEMA will also help individuals and families with funeral expenses due to COVID.
FEMA states that its mission is “helping people before during and after disasters.” This has proved true for Utah with the finical help of $381 million for COVID-19 aid.
